I spoke with Mr Marvolo today.

He appeared pale and did not wish to discuss his feelings. I believe that I successfully communicated with him. I told him that the occurrences at the Frost Faire were his fault. I believe, from his response, that other people have lied to him and told him they were not.

It was not a pleasant conversation, or a long one. Nevertheless, I hope that in future he will, perhaps, think to turn to me. 'The Razzer,' as they call him, is not the best mentor for a young man.

I shall communicate same to Miss Granger via a different method.

I had hoped that I had made it clear that I neither invited, nor expected, birthday greetings.

That said, I acknowledge that most who sent gifts understood that potions ingredients are always appropriate.

As to how I spent my day – far away from the prying curiosity of my colleagues. A present to myself.

  • It is clear that young Mr. Longbottom has been bullied mercilessly by someone; I know not who.
  • He is not utterly hopeless. He is stubborn and occasionally purposefully thick. This may be an asset. Or, it may thoroughly exasperate me. Likely both. He is clearly your son, Alice.
  • He shall get detention again as soon as may be. I gave him license to think of his next infraction himself.
Also, Sirius Black, an excellent Grim Truth.

Was anyone truly surprised at the revelation that Sirius Black is a dog? It is hardly news that he uses Lupin as a tool to harm others when he can. Lupin, of course, being a man of strong passions, cannot be held to blame.

Dora, you have my sympathies, though I doubt you were as surprised as Minerva initially seemed to think.

alt_severus: (disbelief)
Our little student is under lock and key.

I will be watching her most closely until I receive word from you; however, you had best come and tell me in person, in case questions are asked regarding how we have been communicating. Milland does not write, though I have found his book.
alt_severus: (disdain)
Lupin,

I expect your notes on the Wolfsbane potion at your earliest convenience.

It may not be a new formulation, but it is imperative that I learn what the results of holding the process in the midst of brewing were.

Others,

Miss Granger is working out well.

So far I have not met with Milland's factor. There have been no signs of trouble otherwise.
alt_severus: (disinviting)
Miss Granger,

If you would be so kind, I would prefer to know that you are willing to spend time with 'Mr. Milland' before requesting your presence.

If you are as intelligent as they say, I believe that you will jump at the opportunity. However, I would not add one more unpleasant duty to your long list.

If most of you had given the matter even five minutes of thought, it would have occurred to you that my nose is no longer in any way distinguished. Owls addressed to the 'big-nosed berk,' therefore, will go unanswered. Continuing to send them will only frustrate the owls involved, and cause unpleasant scenes at the breakfast table.

I am settling in.

Madam Pomfrey, if you require a brewer for Pepper-Up potion or any similar draught, you need only apply to me. I realise that Horace Slughorn undoubtedly finds the task beneath him, but I do not. Milland complains of lumbago in his journal, which should be excuse enough for you to visit.

Miss Granger. It occurs to me that since there has been some question of whether you should truly be observing all of Mr Marvolo's classes, a request that you aid another during those hours might be granted. If you would like to receive some tutelage in potions-making, I am led to believe that you are not as large an idiot as the average fourteen-year-old witch and therefore might benefit from it. I shall formally request your assignment to me on a part-time basis.

I have not yet met with Milland's superiours and do not know when I will be asked to do so.

Finally. I have put my notes in order at last. There has been no breakthrough in the case of the blood magic. The animagus transformation, thus far, appears to be the only method of successfully erasing the runes.
alt_severus: (disdain)
I have been told I must be more 'accessible.'

Therefore.
  • No one is properly dealing with Harry. He requires closer mentorship. Be silent, Black; you do not count as a 'mentor.'
  • I had no access to proper information, or proper ingredients, at Minerva's home.
  • We require someone other than Minerva in contact with the highest echelons. Entirely too much pressure is upon her.
Finally,
  • I discovered to-day while having lunch with Ms. Acton that she has been sniffing around about 'anti-Protectorate Youths.' I was able to tell her that none of the Weasleys have, to my knowledge, been anti-social, though they are high-spirited.
I hope you shall see my purpose now.
alt_severus: (discipline)
Minerva,

If you would like to preserve your cover, it would be best for you to meet me in the caretaker's quarters immediately.

Bring Milland's personnel file. Assuming that you are not entirely incompetent and he has a personnel file, of course.

All others,

I certainly swore an oath to Minerva McGonagall. The contents of the oath were that I would obey the head of the Order of the Phoenix. Unless there has been a coup, I believe the head of the Order of the Phoenix remains -- and always will remain -- Albus Dumbledore. He may order me out of Hogwarts at any time he cares to present himself.

I will be quite busy for the rest of the evening. No need to leave me irritating notes.

Stop peppering me with owls. I'll use the ridiculous journal. Feathers in my tea

Mr McGivern, we may stop looking for the location component in the potion. It's not there. Gratifying to know that I was correct in thinking that Carrow is too much of an imbecile to incorporate that quality into a blood-binding spell. Given the assumed runic component of the writing he used, we may then suppose that that which would keep Mr Boot within Carrow's radius is runic in nature as well. The 'steel' quill reinforces my theory - Carrow was likely using iron, and the iron stylus was a favourite tool for those using blood-based runic magic. If it's a rune that's binding Mr Boot to Carrow's location, it's a simple matter of finding it and destroying it properly. The blood rune is another matter entirely.

Black, I would like to put a stop to this nonsense about the animagus transformation once and for all. My research on the subject - to my vast surprise - reinforces your theory that assuming the animagus form does indeed interrupt the workings of a blood-binding spell. Before you allow this to get to your head, however, recall that time is of the essence, and you are asking a vast deal of a young man under distressive circumstances. Not everyone is as privileged as you were at that age.

Blood-based magic is usually performed once every few months on the subject for the purpose of reinforcement. The bond grows stronger with each new dose. Rather than place an optimistically tall order on the boy, I find it much more plausible to find a way to erase the runes ourselves. It would be an ordeal, but nearly anything is more conceivable than expecting a boy of his age and education to master the animagus transformation.

Lupin and Professor Sprout, I have need of more supplies, and am informed it is not yet "safe enough" to get them myself. I understand that you are the individuals to contact in such matters, and I expect my order to be executed swiftly and thoroughly.

- Calcite - if mercantile sources exhausted or dubious, locate at White Cliffs of Dover qty. 10oz.
- Adder skin qty. 5, preferably unbroken
- Ammonium chloride qty. 2oz.
- Fresh buckwheat qty. 3 bushels

Minerva, you have run out of green tea.

Lupin -

I need an exact description of how the latest Wolfsbane formula has affected you thus far. If you have suffered a continuance of the aforementioned adverse affects, I need the date and time of day on which they occurred, as well as a thorough description of their endurance and severity. I hope, for your sake, that you have been taking notes. Be precise - I would prefer not to chase you down for elaborations on statements like "it hurt" or "afternoonish." These final few days are the most crucial, as you are already aware. Keep me notified.

Miss Granger -

While I am in the habit of sending letters by owl, I must grudgingly admit the merits of this particular medium, secured as it is. I am entirely wary of the 'private message' device, coming as it does from the upper echelons of the Ministry, but it stands to reason that it serves its purpose within the Order lock. Until I am given reason to do otherwise, we may continue our correspondence here.

That being said, I wish to express my regrets for the experience you endured some weeks ago. At the time I was questioned at some length about methods for enduring the Cruciatus curse and questioning via Legilimency without any mention of yourself as the intended subject. Regardless, there was little I could do given the time strictures, limited access to supplies, and lack of background on whom it was to be. I do not doubt your fortitude of character. I do, however, wish to arm you against such circumstances in the future.

I am also given to understand that your colleague, Mr Boot, was removed from your sphere and consigned entirely to Amycus Carrow. Your accurate references to runes in your journal inspired me to revisit the field both for subject matter for my next publication and for material which might benefit yourself and Mr Boot. Your access to library materials will be somewhat limited this summer, I understand, otherwise I would urge you to confirm that which I will impart for the sake of academic rigor. However, everything I write here has been tested extensively by myself, as with every lesson I publish.

I have formulated sequences for you both - see the attached list with inscriptions and instructions - but the final set is for Mr Boot particularly. I place my trust in your skill as an instructress to impart my directions to Mr Boot with the utmost precision. He must practise the act of tracing the rune multiple times before attempting it with a wand, and have the instructions to reverse it memorized completely before he begins. He must not wear it for longer than five hours. Keep me notified of your progress in this matter.

Regards,

-S.S.-

Walk today 14:05-16:37, some success with willow cuttings, less with acquiring proper cauldron. Supplies needed: silver knife (sterling) and sharpening stone, mortar and pestle (granite) and decent cutting surface. Would greatly prefer somewhere underground. Contamination from humidity and insects intolerable. Continued close monitoring and fatuous questions intolerable.

Subj. runes, lacking proper references am forced to practise from memory. Need access to library. Smaller experiments successful - patched deficient cauldron, reinforced clothing against tearing and, theoretically, cutting (am apparently not yet allowed sharp objects in manner of child or madman, most flattering.) Useless, of course. Runes sequences must be brief and memorable while still providing material protection and influence. Wish could access works on blood runes, but for lack of access to Restricted section as well as excess of hysteria from P & co. Useful sequences in event of being imprisoned useless in current situation as even sufficient warning alarms guards. Mention to M among many other things.

For T and H, as well as inclusion in Draught:
- Make person wearing rune seem unimportant, specifically forgettable (others to make them seem friendly or threatening depending on purpose.) Ideally painted, can be sewn.
- Rune to weaken surfaces to be made breakable by ordinary force (is over nine characters long, too complex? Test on stone of various thicknesses as well as wood, mortar, metal, etc.) Carved or painted.
For T specifically:
- Recall that the boy has a wand, according to Order readings - can therefore perform wand-traced runes sequence as found in Wartime Runes of Ancient Britain (procure copy for confirmation) which toughens internal structures from traumatic damage. Be sure to list side effects (slightly lowered core temperature, constipation) and give detailed instructions for erasing.
General:
- Incendiary no, too much potential for abuse and backfiring, cannot have them running around alight
- Rune to be placed on intended victim, attracts undivided attention (malicious? benign? amorous?) of local fauna - good for purposes of diversion and harassment, and few characters necessary in either of above cases. Sewn or woven onto frame.
- Certainly too complex for most, but would remiss not to list - to shield a domicile or other hiding-place from notice. Difficulties: shields from all notice, even those who leave briefly with intent of returning. Very long and very easy to confound. Less complex is rune sequence which makes those seeking to find the marked place become lost, i.e. sequence used against Muggles on Hogwarts grounds, but same problem as with first in that it effects all equally (Be explicit about the undiscriminating aspect of runes in introduction)
